Well, my main goal of this trip was to surpass the photos I took years ago. In case you don't know, one of my first big adventures was with a friend of mine, Lisa. We went down to DC years ago for the Cherry Blossom Festival. This was shortly after I got into photography, and all I had was a film camera and two not-great kit lenses. I also had minimal skills. Having said that, I always felt that many of my best shots came from that day.

Once I went digital, and got better at photography, I started craving going back to try again. Well, I didn't get to shoot as much as I wanted (my favorite place is the Tidal Basin, but there wasn't time); however, if nothing else, this shot alone makes me feel like I truly succeeded.

I'm not sure what it breaks down to as far as what is skills, equipment, and just picking a good day, but today was a perfect blend of everything.

So, this is an interesting story.

First, you have to queue up in a pretty lengthy line of reservation only people, while being constantly reminded that you are not allowed to have a camera or even take photos with your phone.

Second, when you are done winding through the lengthy queue, you make it to the first security check-point. Here, they check your ID and if it doesn't match the name on the list exactly, or if you fell off the list, you get placed in a detention pen. Basically, this is where a bunch of people who don't speak English, and myself, have to stand for a period of time.

Third, you make it 100 feet and there is another security checkpoint that is not able to communicate with the first checkpoint at all, and they check your ID again, and possibly place you back in the detention pen.

Fourth, you get inside, and go through the metal detectors, then join the not-real-queue of non-English speaking tourists to look at about 7 empty rooms.

Lastly, you leave, try to take photos of the not-famous side of the White House, and get yelled at. Having said all that, it is a must-have experience, and actually quite enjoyable. Just don't expect to see, let alone have memories of, the famous front-side.

So, the GPS we were using to get to Sulphur Springs, Ohio blew a fuse or something, and would only take us on the the smallest roads in the country. I didn't figure this out until it got us lost, and stuck going in circles in Stubeonville Ohio, on the way home though. So somewhere in Ohio we came across a wonderful place called the "Dairy Jean"They severed wonderful curly fries and pumpkin milkshakes. The end.

So, I was shooting a soccer game and there is a running track that goes around it. This woman was running around the track before the game started, so I snapped a few pictures. I did do some post-processing, but it turned out well.

Also a note: If I would have been goofing around shooting her, I wouldn't have realised my camera was bumped into manual mode, and would have likely missed a few good shots of soccer. Just saying.

Tonight was the last home Steel City Derby Demon bout for the season. So instead of doing my usual, re-post a bunch of photos from my flickr stream, I wanted to do a more detailed post about my thoughts on the experience working for the league, what I’ve learned about photography, this particular photo, and anything else that comes to my mind. However, I feel now like shorter is better.
What I will say though is that everyone I met and talked to this season was amazing, and I am going to be really bored until next season. From a photographer and spectator point of view, it is an amazing sport that is both serious and fun at the same time. Anyone who gets the chance to go to a bout should. Again, I look forward to next season.
On to the photo. The un-edited version is farther down my flickr stream, but this seems to be the much better version. Basically, I had a 16 x 20 frame laying around that I always wanted to put up, and figured that I should pick one photo from the season and put it up. I selected this one, which happens to be from the last home game. The un-edited version has a lot of yellow, so I did the old hand-coloring technique, and colored Snot Rocket Science (still my favorite name) back in. The problem was the motion-blurred arms, and it took three of us to get that to look good. I was very grateful at the time to have such good help, and even more once I got the photo up in my office. I am quite pleased with the results, as well as all my time spent at Romp N Roll. Is it next season yet?

From time to time, as you probably know, I have been awarded the opportunity to meet and/or listen to a lot of worthwhile speakers. Today, I spent the afternoon and evening listening to this crew give motivational talks to high school track and field players.

The two men on the left are coaches that have worked with Olympic athletes among other notable athletes. The man on the right, is the most notable in my eyes. Apparently, Cal U has as a Track and Field coach, a two time Olympic Gold medalist. He gave a very good speech to the group, and this shot is from the Q and A session at the end. This was taken as soon as he put on one of his gold medals.

An Evening with Anthony Bourdain

This post is going to be broken in to two parts: The first is my personal feelings and why I like Bourdain. The second is the first draft of what I am expecting to turn in to the Herald-Standard for my article. Keep in mind I have been writing since I got home from the show, and it is now kind of late and I edited a good bit of photos and some video. I’ll add the video later.
“An Evening With Anthony Bourdain” is completely unlike what you expect an author’s speaking tour to be, and that makes it what you want, and expect from Anthony Bourdain. On June 14, he brought it to Pittsburgh’s Heinz Hall.
What he talked about is better defined by what he didn’t talk about. Last week, his latest book “Medium Raw” was released. The title was not dropped once in the over two hours he was on stage. He was more interested in sharing stories from his travels as well as his thoughts and ideas on a wide variety of subjects. The easiest way to think of it is: part memoir, part stand-up comedy, and part informational. Some of the stories will be recognizable stories to his fans. Towards the beginning he told the story about Rachel Ray sending him a muffin basket. From a fan’s point of view though, seeing Bourdain on stage tell the stories is completely different then reading them or seeing it in an interview.
The wide variety of subjects Bourdain spoke about says something about the crowd he can draw. He appeals to chefs as a former chef, to people who love food, and to people who love to travel. Most people fall in to one of those three categories. He covered all these topics in great detail. He talked about everything from his thoughts on Food Network, various personalities in the food business (ones he likes as well as ones he doesn’t like), his personal life both in the past and present,. He even gave some tips on what people should keep in mind when traveling, both as far as food and cultural differences.
There is a fairly new topic that he loves to talk about: his family. As is the case with many parents, he is proud of his three-year-old daughter, and looks for reasons to talk about her. Even this is done with his style, bringing her in to stories with how we can topple the fast food establishments that are doing no one any good.
A major draw for a lot of people seemed to be a lengthy Question and Answer section, that made up about half of Bourdain’s stage time. This gives the audience a chance to get up and ask any question they want. Recently, Bourdain wrote a blog post about how he was annoyed with answering the same questions again and again from journalists, but you could not tell from the Q and A. He took the whole session with a laugh and a playful approach.

On a personal level, Anthony Bourdain appeals to me on all fronts, and I don’t think I would be the person I am today without seeing his show over the years. Here is just this guy. He worked 28 years in horrible conditions, wrote a successful book, and now he travels the world having fun on someone else’s dime. It is something I am sure we all have thought of at one point or another, but before him I didn’t think it could be real.
I may not always seem like it but I have always been quite happy and fortunate with my life. I admit it. I just have an excuse to times like this. I mean, I am 22 and have met both of my main heroes in life (Who by the way are fairly famous). In this case, I got in to the special book signing, bringing my total of signed Bourdain books to TWO, I got to talk to him on the phone, and met him. On top of that, I got special photography access (I didn’t see anyone else there with good camera gear) as well as an in to the closed, and very expensive meet and greet, for free. So yeah, I do pretty well for myself and I am just getting started.

So, here's the main event: She & Him.

First, it was at the House of Blues in Cleveland. It was a weird repeat on a lot of fronts. Last time I was in Cleveland was a few years ago, to see Norah Jones at Playhouse Square. The opening act was M. Ward, who in case you don't know is the him in she and him. Before that show, I ate at the House of Blues.

I have never been to a show at the House of Blues before, and can't say I ever want to again. The venue is standing room only, and they pack you in there really tight.

Having said that, the actual show was amazing. Zooey especially is really full of energy. They played the majority of their songs, and that made me happy. I've seen a lot of concerts over the years, and I just keep finding better and better ones.

I don't have a lot of good photos from the show, you know how it goes with concerts.

I met up with a friend of mine who lives in Cleveland, and she suggested we eat at "Eastern Pacific Japanese Restaurant". I got the pictured Naruto roll which is yellowtail and vegetables wrapped in cucumber. I also had a bubble tea to drink. I don't know how to explain it, but basically, Bubble tea is basically a fruit flavored tea, in this case strawberry, with balls of tapioca that you suck through a large straw. It was a really good.
