Elizabeth

Okay, this is the top one of the cluster, so it gets the full story attached to it.

Basically, the radio station I listen to all the time, WYEP, releases a CD every year. The CD is comprised of studio sessions from notable artists that pass through Pittsburgh. They have a CD release party in Schenely Plaza for it each year. This year it was an amazingly wonderful day and they had "Elizabeth and the Catapult" headlining the free show. There was really no downside what-so-ever to this.

The show was amazing, we sat in the front row, right in front of her piano, and I got to meet her afterward, briefly. It was a good day.

I shot some videos too. Hopefully, they will explain why I love this band. They are below as well as on my new youtube channel.

The title of this is ironic because the woman with the dark hair is Elizabeth, as in "Elizabeth and the Catapult"

Also, that thing she is pushing is a really cool fold out piano that she plays. I just thought that was interesting.

There was a really cute bird hopping around under the chairs, and I was trying to get a photo of that. I failed, and instead got a picture of converses...

My friend was eating a really good looking scooby doo ice cream thingy, and we did a time lapse as it degraded. I found this one to be the most entertaining and posted it instead of the time lapse.

While the concert, and myself, were under a tent, the majority of the people hung out on the grass.

head First

Today was a pretty intense day. Basically, I found out I got in to grad school on Friday. That meant that my days of not having a lot of things to photograph are drawing to an end, for a few more years at least. So, I had a picnic to go to today, and figured while I was in Cal that I would shoot some sports, play with some equipment I can't afford, and generally start getting back in to my old habits. I didn't intend to shoot as much as I did, but I'm back to my old ways.

I thought a lot of these photos, especially the football ones, are probably the best I've ever done with football. I hope the 23 shots I posted today from the various sports reminds everyone what I am capable of. I know I was personally starting to forget, as well as wonder if I still had it in me. The answer is yes, I am still capable of happily spending all day running around in the sun with a lot of heavy stuff and not wanting to complain about it.

Pushing and Shoving

IMG_9747, originally uploaded by ajcarpinelli.

I decided to post this last, so it would stay at the top of the pile. I think it is a great shot, and I want to use it to explain my thoughts and feelings on Roller Derby, as well as why you should go to at least one game in your life time
I have always been a fan of Roller Derby, I don't even remember where it stemmed from. Somewhere in my childhood, a long lost memory, I assume. I didn't think anyone thought much about it now until "Whip It" was released, and then I randomly found out Pittsburgh has a league. I went to check it out last month, at the home opener, and I now find it necessary to go to every game I can. I realized that I am really not alone, as both the home games have been sold out. The announcers said tonight that is over 750 people.
I have always loved the sport for a few reasons. Mainly, there is a great sense of humor and a true spirit of good fun that seem to go with it. The spirit shows itself in the face of most or all the players. I'm not saying they don't take it seriously, because they do. I am saying that they still have fun. You lose that in a lot of sports. Even the announcers usually have a running commentary of jokes. The sense of humor comes through in the derby names. This is unique to the sport, and for someone just getting in, following your favorite names is a great way to get in to the sport. The last reason that I have always loved this sport is that it is a very grass roots movement. Yes, the teams all have sponsors, merch booths, and everything but there is still a very down to earth feeling to it. That makes me want to support them all the more. It is easier to see what the ticket price goes to with a sport like this, as opposed to the Steelers for example.
The rules are pretty simple compared to most sports, and it is a fairly easy sport to follow. Everything moves quickly, and the half-hour quarters fly by.
Let me end this by saying I recommend everyone go to at least one game. The tickets are around $20, for about 3 hours worth of derby. Also, our main team, Steel Hurtin', is pretty good. All the teams always put on a good show. Here is the link to their website. You can order tickets in advance, follow them on twitter or facebook, or just find out about the team.
I am going to go back and write captions and little things for the other photos when I get a chance, but I wanted to get this one done first.
Lastly, consider comparing these shots to the ones I did last month. I borrowed a top of the line telephoto as well as a 5D mk. ii for the night, and I think there is considerable quality difference. The 5D has amazing low light performance. Feel free to post comments letting me know what you think...

Passport

I have always answered the question "What do you do?" with "I'm a photographer, writer, and adventurer for hire." Today, that statement feels truer then ever.

My passport arrived today, and I was struck with the oddest feeling because of it. I feel that this is one of those things that you never really know you needed or wanted, for the most part, until you have it. In my mind at least, this is an essential piece of equipment for my career. The other side of this is that, I feel in a way it is wasted money. I mean, it is going to just sit here for who knows how long, before I ever use it. In a way, there is sort of this expectation that when you buy something, there should be an immediate sense of gratification. A test run of sorts. If you get new equipment, for example, you have to play with it right away to test it out. Same with software. That reminds me, I am going to write a reviewish post here in the next weeks about my thoughts on Aperture 3.
Back to the passport though, I am pretty conflicted. There have been several times in my life that I almost got one to go places, but in the end, I never really bothered. Well, I am applying for a job that might involve international travel if I make it to the final round of interviews, and needed to have it right now. Expediting a passport is amazing by the way. From the application day to the day I got it was 5 business days. I think it is an amazing feat. A tip for anyone who is in the same situation: The tracking on the website is not always up to date. Mine still says they are finishing it up, and will ship it out by Monday. So now, my aimless wanderings are no longer bound by geographical borders. A lot of people seem to feel that a driver's license is the ultimate sense of freedom, but in my mind a passport is a much better one. Now all I have to do, is start getting contracts for amazing globe-trotting adventures.
